Be Prepared for When the Crisis Hits: The Value of Unified Command

When I was in law enforcement in Alabama, I learned quickly that a routine day could change in an instant. A tornado could rip through a neighborhood, a multi-car pileup could block the interstate, or a simple argument could escalate far beyond expectations. Crises don’t wait for the perfect conditions. They arrive fast, and they test how prepared we really are.
That is why September, National Emergency Preparedness Month, matters so much. Preparedness is not only about families stocking supplies or schools running drills. It is also about whether our public safety agencies are ready to respond together when the stakes are highest.
The Challenge of Fragmentation
Emergencies rarely stay in one agency’s lane. A severe weather event can require police, fire, EMS, and emergency management all at once. But usually those agencies come to the scene with different systems, radios, and reporting processes.
That fragmentation slows down response at the very moment when every second matters. Leaders spend precious time managing logistics instead of directing strategy. Crews in the field may not see the bigger picture. And communities are left waiting for clear answers in the middle of uncertainty.
Why Unified Command Matters
Unified command solves that problem. It is not about merging agencies. It is about merging visibility and coordination so that every responder is working from the same operational picture.
When responders can see the same map, share the same updates, and act on the same information, they can make faster, clearer, and safer decisions.
